Not all love stories that culminate in a marriage have a happy ending. Krishnan Marriage Story, which looks like a sequel to Krishnan Love Story, promises to present itself as a case in consideration; but the two films have nothing in common except the hero and their identical names. And whoever said that the love loses its charm after the marriage will have all the reasons to rejoice after watching this movie.
While many of our films at least pretend to have some stories going on, Krishnan Marriage Story will do none of it. Most of the times, the film just looks like the watered down version of a Sooraj Barjatya family drama with sugary sweet characters roaming aimlessly in a big mansion without any particular purpose other than filling up the wide angle shots. Of course, there is a love story going on, but predicting the course of that story is as difficult as trying to guess which side the sun would come up tomorrow morning.
But amidst all these filmy family characters and a predictable lover story, there are some surprisingly well handled scenes that make you look at director Nutan Umesh with hope. The relationship between Nidhi and her father, although very filmy, is really sweet. The dialogues between the two are enjoyable too. There is a scene where Nidhi is going to her husband’s house after marriage and her father is holding back his tears and tries to look cool. Nidhi, who always calls her father by name in the film, says, “Parameshwarappa, let’s cry at least for the sake of formality,” and both break into uncontrollable sobs soon after that.

Nice one. But unfortunately, scenes like these are less, and what troubles you more are the battery of character artists that will put even a Suraj Barjatya’s set to shame. While most of the first half is consumed by a dragging love story between Ajay and Nidhi, the second half is an embarrassing tribute to Suraj Barjatya and Karan Johar style of filmmaking, where some filthy rich people with the heart of gold are trying to outdo each other in their selfless deeds. We always wondered what the men in such families do as they are very rich but they never seem to work for a living!
The film’s heart and soul is Nidhi Subbaiah without a shadow of doubt. The girl looks like an all in one package of glamour, vulnerability and energy all rolled into one, and this is a rarity in KFI. But she must have had a sense of déjà vu as she lands up in the same place where her previous film Pancharangi was shot. The director also uses some roads and the same house used in Pancharangi and this must have felt like a true homecoming for Nidhi!
Ajay does ok in a mock sequel where he gets unlucky for the second time in a row. Although Krishnan Love Story appeared to be a hero oriented film, it was Radhika Pandit who walked away with all the accolades and now, it seems its Nidhi’s turn to do the same to Ajay. But the man is good in whatever opportunity he gets.
There is an army of character artists who play a close knit family and they might be offended if we review their performances separately! Suffice to say that they have all done well.
An ok film, which could have been much better!
